A knock at the door interrupted them. “Yes,” Janice called out.

Betty opened the door and poked her head in. “Judge Crammer’s office just called. The jury is back.”

Janice glanced at her watch and smiled. “Already. Maybe this is going to turn into a really good day.” She looked at Andi. “I have to go. Hopefully, I’m about to nail a wife-beater.” She looked back to Betty. “Tell them I’m on my way.”

As soon as the door closed, Janice stood. “I’m sorry I couldn’t help you. I know it’s little consolation, but despite what a lot of the more sensational news reporters would like the world to think, it’s rare that an innocent person is convicted.”

“But it does happen,” Andi protested, more for her grandmother’s sake than her own.

“Yes, it does occasionally, and as I said, you give a compelling reason and I’ll do my best to set things right.” She grabbed a card from her desk and began writing on the back. “Here’s my card. I’ve written my home and cell numbers on the back. If you find something, give me a call.” She stopped and looked up, smiling. “Or you could just call me sometime.” She handed the card to Andi.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to run.”

And run she did. Seconds after Andi left her office, Janice Reed left the DA’s office from a rear door. Andi watched her as she ran across the back parking lot to the courthouse.

Andi decided to stop by the HiHo News to see Rhonda. She had enjoyed their previous conversation. Maybe she would have some suggestions as to how Andi should proceed. As she walked the two blocks, she knew that no matter what happened, for her grandmother, losing her father could never be set right.
